The St. Joe River in 2020

Several of us were able to fish the St. Joe River in Idaho this year and, as always, had a great time of it. The trip started for many of us with some horrific winds for our commute and arrival to the Huckleberry Campground. The next day, we gathered for a little "hole hopping" in many of our favorite spots. We had limited success and blamed the poor bite on the recent weather change - that's my story and I'm sticking with it! The second day, we launched the armada of personal watercrafts and set out to fish from the bridge back to camp. Mixed results, but some success on Parachute Adams, Purple Haze, Elk Hair Caddis, and a few droppers like a Bead Head Pheasant Tail. We tried Ants, Blue Winged Olives and Pale Morning Duns with limited success, but kept going to the well (well stocked fly boxes). We worked the river above Avery and found several nice fish in the deep holes and along the bolder edges, no fish is safe from the determined group of anglers using Sculpzillas, Mahogany CDC Caddis and Comparaduns and a hopper/dropper combination. The smoke started to build in the canyon as many of us were heading home, a true indication of the difficult times other folks are experiencing throughout the West.
