I went Fishing

Yakima River in June

Steven Foster and I headed over to Ellensburg, WA to fish the canyon section of the Yakima River. Prior to the trip,we talked about the logisticsics of camping, fishing, shuttling, etc. so that we could practice proper distancing. We booked 2 campsites at Bighorn Campground thru Red's Flyshop. Launched from there for an afternoon float to the BLM site at Umtanum for takeout. On Thursday, we shuttled vehicles and launched at Ringer Loop for a long float to Big Pines BLM Campground. We caught several fish over the 2 days, tried several setups, but had most success with a brown nymph ~3' under an indicator. My favorite had a copper bead, copper wire wrap and a bit of a biot tail in size 8-16.

I caught more fish, but they were all smaller than Steven's fish, I was using the smaller flies. We toyed with the notion that bigger flies yielded bigger fish, but could not convince ourelves that was the case.

The water was running at 2500cfs and was pretty clear, with the exception of the tributary entering at the tressel area, it blended pretty well. The river is in great shape until they open the gate, then it is tough to fish. If you have qeuestions, pleasecontact Steven or myself.
