Alaska Salmon and (a few) Trout

A friend from the Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club, Mark McGinnis, invited me to share his "bucket list" fishing trip to Alaska during the last week of August. At Riversong Lodge we had four full days of fishing tributaries of the Yentna River, which is about 70 air miles NW of Anchorage. We had expected to focus on trout amid all the salmon, but our timing was such that until our last day, the trout were simply too full of salmon eggs to have any interest in our presentations. So, we "settled" for Coho and had one heck of a time.

Using 8 wt rods, floating lines, and weighted size 2, 4 and 6 streamers in pink, purple, or black, we had no trouble filling our limits of three fish per angler per day, then releasing who knows how many more before heading back to the bar(n).

Mark, it sounds like a wonderful trip. I know how excited McGinn was about going and you being able to join him is priceless. Thanks for sharing the amazing photos and stories, it sounds like it met (or exceeded) bucket list expectations.
