SRCs on Hood Canal in Apr'22

Several FFF club members gathered at Dosewallips State Park to fish for searun cutthroat trout on Hood Canal. Most people RV camped in the campground or stayed at housing nearby. The group included: Craig Edwards, Dean Campbell, Steven Foster, Phil Latendresse, Ryan and Denise Johnson, Les Books, Warren Myers (Bill's guest) and myself. After much preparation, Warren Carr was not able to join us.

On Monday, many of us took the Coupeville to Port Townsend ferry and stopped to fish Oyster Shell Beach on Indian Island. We worked the rain soaked cut for a few hours, with no fish in sight, loaded our wet gear and headed to the State Park. Craig and Dean hosted a lovely spaghetti dinner at a friend's cabin and we enjoyed a group gathering in a warm and dry location.

Tuesday weather was better and we converged on the beach at the shellfish research center at Point Whitney. We fished the outgoing tide, took a break at slack and fished while the water came back in. Warren Myers caught and landed a very nice SRC as you can see in the photos. Leave it to Keeler to bring a ringer! The wonderful evening weather was coupled with an amazing oyster dinner where all hands were on deck. We all shucked, prepared, ate and cleaned up several dozens of oysters from Hama Hama Oyster Farm.

Wednesday the group split up. We checked out the beaches at Shine Tidelands State Park and Shine County Park only to find a very silty sandy bottom with no structure. This group moved to Kitsap Memorial State Park and fished for several hours with no luck. The other group set out for Indian Island and Point Whitney and ended with similar results.

In terms of fishing, a pretty tough few days. With regards to an outing - outstanding! I was able to see people I had not seen in a while and fish with folks for the first time. The scenery, the company and the experience is why I joined the FFF. I hope you all have a similar experience one day.
